=== Post-retirement === After retiring from the presidency in 2003, Atkinson became chair of the Division of Behavioral and Social Sciences and Education and served in that position until 2011.Β The division, part of the [[National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine|National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine]], works to advance the frontiers of the behavioral and social sciences and their applications to public policy.
