==Governance== === Administration === At the time of the 2010 census, Ternate city (which includes seven neighbouring islands and islets as well as the main island of Ternate) was divided into seven [[Districts of Indonesia|districts]], but in 2018 an eighth district (Ternate Barat) was created in the west of the island from part of the Pulau Ternate District. The districts are tabulated below with their areas (in square kilometres) and their populations during the 2010<ref name="Biro Pusat Statistik 2011"/> and 2020 censuses,<ref name="Badan Pusat Statistik 2021"/> together with the official estimates as at mid 2024.<ref name="Badan Pusat Statistik 2025">Badan Pusat Statistik, Jakarta, 28 February 2025, ''Kota Ternate Dalam Angka 2025'' (Katalog-BPS 1102001.8271)</ref> Five of these districts are on the island of Ternate, and the remaining three each consist of a smaller neighbouring island or (in the case of Pulau Batang Dua District) islands. The table also includes the locations of the district administrative centres, the number of subdistricts in each district (all classed as urban ''kelurahan''), and its post code. {| class="sortable wikitable" |- !
