==Family== {{Anchor|Thomas Sumter Jr.}} Thomas' son, Thomas Sumter Jr., served in [[Rio de Janeiro]] from 1810 to 1819 as the [[List of ambassadors of the United States to Portugal|United States Ambassador to the Portuguese Court]] during its exile to [[Brazil]].
