=== Accelerations === The NICHD nomenclature<ref name=nic/> defines an acceleration as a visually apparent abrupt increase in fetal heart rate. An abrupt increase is defined as an increase from the onset of acceleration to the peak in 30 seconds or less. To be called an acceleration, the peak must be at least 15{{nbsp}}bpm, and the acceleration must last at least 15 seconds from the onset to return to baseline.<ref>{{cite journal|last=Bailey|first=R. Eugene|title=Intrapartum Fetal Monitoring|journal=[[American Family Physician]]|volume=80|issue=12|pages=1388β1396|date=15 December 2009|pmid=20000301|url=http://www.aafp.org/link_out?pmid=20000301}}</ref> A ''prolonged acceleration'' is greater than 2 minutes but less than 10 minutes in duration, while an acceleration lasting 10 minutes or more is defined as a baseline change. Before 32 weeks of gestation, accelerations are defined as having a peak of at least 10{{nbsp}}bpm and a duration of at least 10 seconds.<ref name="John Wiley & Sons"/>
