===Orthography=== The Cheyenne orthography of 14 letters is neither a pure phonemic system nor a phonetic transcription; it is, in the words of linguist Wayne Leman, a "pronunciation orthography". In other words, it is a practical spelling system designed to facilitate proper pronunciation. Some allophonic variants, such as voiceless vowels, are shown. e represents the phoneme symbolized /e/, and Ε‘ represents /Κ/. ====Vowels==== * a β [a] * e β [e/Ιͺ/Ι] * o β [o] ====Consonants==== * h β [h/s/Κ] * k β [k] * ' β [Κ] * m β [m] * n β [n] * p β [p] * s β [s] * Ε‘ β [Κ] * t β [t] * v β [v] * x β [x] ====Tones==== * Γ‘, Γ©, Γ³ β high tone * Θ§, Δ, Θ― or Γ’, Γͺ, Γ΄ β voiceless or whispered Low tone is usually unmarked.
