== Molting == [[File:Animal warning sign, Onrus Beach (South Africa).jpg|thumb|upright|Warning sign seen in South Africa to protect molting seals while hauling out on land]] Once a year, elephant seals go through a process called [[Moulting|molting]] where they shed the outer layer of hair and skin.<ref name=":2" /> This molting process takes up to a month to complete.<ref name=":2" /> When it comes time to molt, they will haul out on land to shed their outer layer, and will not consume any food during this time.<ref name=":2" /> The females and juveniles will molt first, followed by the sub adult males, and finally the large mature males.<ref name=":2" />
