===Revised project: FutureGen 2.0=== On August 5, 2010, the DOE announced a retooling of the FutureGen project, dubbed FutureGen 2.0.<ref name="doe05aug2010">{{cite press release |title=Secretary Chu Announces FutureGen 2.0 |date=August 5, 2010 |url=http://energy.gov/articles/secretary-chu-announces-futuregen-20 |publisher=US Dept. of Energy}}</ref> The revised plan includes retrofitting a shuttered coal-fired power plant in [[Meredosia, Illinois]] to demonstrate advanced oxy-combustion technology, and piping the carbon dioxide 175 miles to Mattoon for underground storage. Due to these changes, leaders in Mattoon decided to drop out of the FutureGen project.<ref>{{cite news | last = Kacich | first = Tom | title = Coles County says 'no' to FutureGen | work = Champaign News-Gazette | date = 2010-08-11 | url = http://www.news-gazette.com/news/environment/2010-08-11/coles-county-says-no-futuregen.html | access-date = 2010-08-12}}</ref> The Illinois sites vying for the underground storage portion of the project were in Christian, Douglas, Fayette, and Morgan counties, after sites in Adams and Pike counties were cut in December 2010.<ref>{{cite news | title = FutureGen narrows potential carbon sites to 4 | agency = Associated Press | date = 2010-12-20 | url = https://www.bloomberg.com/news/2010-12-20/futuregen-narrows-potential-carbon-sites-to-4.html | access-date = 2011-02-15}}</ref> In February 2011, [[Morgan County, Illinois|Morgan County]] was chosen for the sequestration site.
