In another of the show's recurring gags, Smart often insists on speaking under the "Cone of Silence" when discussing highly confidential things in the Chief's office. The device, consisting of two transparent plastic hemispheres, is electrically lowered on top of Smart and Chief and is intended to prevent their conversation from being heard outside. The Cone of Silence scene was shot ahead of the rest of the pilot episode, and was used to sell ''Get Smart'' to [[NBC]].<ref>{{Cite book|last=Van Riper|first=A.
