==== Cone of Silence ==== In another of the show's recurring gags, Smart often insists on speaking under the "Cone of Silence" when discussing highly confidential things in the Chief's office. The device, consisting of two transparent plastic hemispheres, is electrically lowered on top of Smart and Chief and is intended to prevent their conversation from being heard outside. The joke is that the apparatus actually makes it impossible for those inside the device–and easy for those outside it–to hear the conversation. The Cone of Silence first appeared in the pilot episode "Mr. Big", which aired on September 18, 1965. The Cone of Silence scene was shot ahead of the rest of the pilot episode, and was used to sell Get Smart to NBC.<ref>{{Cite book|last=Van Riper|first=A.
