===2000 census=== At the [[2000 United States Census|2000 census]] there were 3,106 people, 1,295 households, and 868 families living in the city. The population density was {{convert|912.8|PD/sqmi|PD/km2|sp=us|adj=off}}. There were 1,526 housing units at an average density of {{convert|448.5|/sqmi|/km2|sp=us|adj=off}}. The [[Race and ethnicity in the United States Census#2000 census|racial makeup]] of the city was 80.33% White, 3.90% African American, 0.55% Native American, 0.10% Asian, 12.46% from other races, and 2.67% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 22.70%.<ref name="GR2" /> Of the 1,295 households 29.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.8% were married couples living together, 10.1% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.9% were non-families. 31.3% of households were one person and 20.5% were one person aged 65 or older. The average household size was 2.32 and the average family size was 2.91. The age distribution was 25.2% under the age of 18, 5.7% from 18 to 24, 22.5% from 25 to 44, 20.6% from 45 to 64, and 25.9% 65 or older. The median age was 42 years. For every 100 females, there were 83.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 80.7 male. The median household income was $20,740 and the median family income was $27,109. Males had a median income of $20,245 versus $15,391 for females. The per capita income for the city was $13,114. About 21.5% of families and 28.7% of the population were below the [[poverty line]], including 42.4% of those under age 18 and 18.1% of those age 65 or over.
