==Germany== The German term ''Immatrikulation'' describes the administrative process of enrolling at university as a student.<ref>{{Cite book |last1=Hawicks |first1=Heike |last2=Runde |first2=Ingo |editor-first1=Jochen Hermann |editor-last1=Vennebusch |date=2024-11-11 |title=University Matriculas as Material Testimonies of the Initiation Culture at Universities. A comparative study based on the example of the Heidelberg matriculation records |url=https://biblioscout.net/book/chapter/10.25162/9783515136501/00003 |access-date=2024-11-11 |website=biblioscout.net/|doi=10.25162/9783515136501 |isbn=978-3-515-13650-1 }}</ref> This can happen for winter semester and, depending on the degree program, also for summer semester. It does not involve a ceremony. A prerequisite for matriculation is generally the ''[[Abitur]]'', which is the standard matriculation examination in Germany, for regular universities and ''Fachhochschulreife'' for [[Fachhochschule|''Fachhochschulen'']] (Universities of Applied Sciences). Both ''Abitur'' and ''Fachhochschulreife'' are school leaving certificates which students receive after passing their final examinations at some types of German secondary schools.
