===Gibberellins=== [[File:Gibberellin A1.svg|thumb|155x155px|Gibberellin A1]] [[Gibberellin]]s (GAs) include a large range of chemicals that are produced naturally within plants and by fungi. They were first discovered when Japanese researchers, including Eiichi Kurosawa, noticed a chemical produced by a fungus called ''[[Gibberella fujikuroi]]'' that produced abnormal growth in rice plants.<ref name=Grennan2006>{{cite journal | vauthors = Grennan AK | title = Gibberellin metabolism enzymes in rice | journal = Plant Physiology | volume = 141 | issue = 2 | pages = 524β6 | date = June 2006 | pmid = 16760495 | pmc = 1475483 | doi = 10.1104/pp.104.900192 }}</ref> It was later discovered that GAs are also produced by the plants themselves and control multiple aspects of development across the life cycle. The synthesis of GA is strongly upregulated in seeds at germination and its presence is required for germination to occur. In seedlings and adults, GAs strongly promote cell elongation.
