== Application in nursing == The Pygmalion effect has been noted in several non-educational contexts. For instance, in a nursing home, nurses were told that some patients would progress more quickly in their rehabilitation than others. These patients demonstrated lower levels of depression and required hospitalization less frequently than those with average expectations.<ref>{{cite journal |last1=Learman |first1=Lee A. |last2=Avorn |first2=Jerry |last3=Everitt |first3=Daniel E. |last4=Rosenthal |first4=Robert |title=Pygmalion in the Nursing Home The Effects of Caregiver Expectations on Patient Outcomes |journal=Journal of the American Geriatrics Society |date=July 1990 |volume=38 |issue=7 |pages=797β803 |doi=10.1111/j.1532-5415.1990.tb01472.x|pmid=2196306 |s2cid=43172693 }}</ref> The Pygmalion effect has also been discussed in relation to treating alcohol dependence since it was discovered that therapists who characterized their clients as "motivated" had a lower dropout rate than those who labeled them as "unmotivated".<ref>{{cite journal |last1=Jenner |first1=Hakan |title=The Pygmalion Effect |journal=Alcoholism Treatment Quarterly |date=14 September 1990 |volume=7 |issue=2 |pages=127β133 |doi=10.1300/J020V07N02_09}}</ref>
