Johnson ran unopposed by the [[United States Republican Party|Republican Party]] in his district in the 2004 election. Paul Jenkins, an independent, and James Vessels, a member of the [[Libertarian Party (United States)|Libertarian Party]], ran against Johnson. Johnson won overwhelmingly in a highly Republican district.
