To keep teapots hot after the tea is first brewed, English households since the 18th century employed the [[tea cosy]], a padded fabric covering, much like a hat, that slips over the teapot. The tea cosy became very popular in the 20th century as a practical and decorative object in the kitchen.{{sfn|Pettigrew|2001|p=178}}
