Geologists' embrace of [[plate tectonics]] became part of a broadening of the field from a study of rocks into a study of the Earth as a planet. Other elements of this transformation include: [[Geophysics|geophysical studies]] of the interior of the Earth, the grouping of geology with [[meteorology]] and [[oceanography]] as one of the "[[earth science]]s", and comparisons of Earth and the solar system's other rocky planets.
