====Modern Christian theologians==== Yves Congar commented, "The walls of separation do not reach as high as heaven." And Aidan Nichols remarked that "the la controversy is, in fact, a casualty of the theological pluralism of the patristic Church", on the one hand the Latin and Alexandrian tradition, on the other the Cappadocian and later Byzantine tradition. Among 20th-century Protestant theologians, Karl Barth was perhaps the staunchest defender of the Filioque doctrine. Barth was harshly critical of the ecumenical movement which advocated dropping the Filioque in order to facilitate reunification of the Christian churches. Barth's vigorous defence of the Filioque ran counter to the stance of many Protestant theologians of the latter half of the 20th century who favoured abandoning the use of the Filioque in the liturgy.
