==Emigration and knighthood==
In 1881, Maxim arrived in Britain to reorganise the London offices of the United States Electric Lighting Company.<ref>{{cite web|url=https://www.pbs.org/wgbh/theymadeamerica/whomade/maxim_hi.html|title=Who Made America|publisher=PBS}}</ref> His visits back to the United States became increasingly infrequent and, on 16 September 1899, Maxim became a naturalised [[British citizen]].<ref>{{London Gazette
