==PIN== Postal Index Number The Postal Index Number (PIN, or sometimes redundantly PIN code) is a six-digit postal code. The PIN system was made by Shriram Bhikaji Velankar when he was at service in Kolkata. It was introduced on 15 August 1972 by former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. There are nine postal zones in the country; the first eight are geographical regions, and the ninth is reserved for the Army Postal Service (APS905898). The PIN system is organised in the following way: * The first digit indicates the zone. * The first two digits indicate the sub-zone (or postal circle). * The first three digits indicate a sorting district. * The first four digits indicate a service route. * The last two digits indicate the delivery post office. The PIN for an address may be found on the Postal Service website. There are total of 19,101 PINs covering 154,725 post offices in India, with the exception of the Army Postal Service, 2014.
