To express a period of time one may add {{lang|ja|間}} {{translit|ja|kan}} to the following words: {{lang|ja|秒}} {{translit|ja|byō}}, {{lang|ja|分}} {{translit|ja|fun}}, {{lang|ja|時}} {{translit|ja|ji}}, {{lang|ja|日}} {{translit|ja|nichi}} (and its irregular readings aside from {{translit|ja|tsuitachi}}), {{lang|ja|週}} {{translit|ja|shū}}, {{lang|ja|ヶ月}} {{translit|ja|kagetsu}} and {{lang|ja|年}} {{translit|ja|nen}}. Usage varies depending on the word, though. For example, omitting {{translit|ja|kan}} in the case of {{lang|ja|時間}} {{translit|ja|jikan}} would be a mistake, whereas {{translit|ja|shūkan}} and {{translit|ja|shū}} are both in frequent use. In addition, {{translit|ja|kagetsukan}} is rarely heard due to essentially being superfluous, the {{translit|ja|ka}} already functioning to express the length.
