[[Festa Junina|''Festa Juninas'']], ''June Festival'' in Brazil, also known as São João Festivals because they celebrate the [[Nativity of John the Baptist|nativity of Saint John the Baptist]] (24 June), are annual [[Brazilians|Brazilian]] celebrations adapted from the European summer solstice, which occurs in the middle of the southern hemisphere's winter. These festivities, introduced by the [[Portuguese people|Portuguese]] during the [[Colonial Brazil|colonial period]] (1500–1822), are celebrated throughout the country during the month of June. As the [[Northeast Region, Brazil|Northeast of Brazil]] is largely [[Aridity|arid]] or [[Semi-arid climate|semi-arid]], these festivals not only coincide with the [[Climate of Brazil|end of the rainy seasons]] in most states of the region but also offer people the opportunity to thank [[John the Baptist|Saint John]] for the rain. They also celebrate [[Rural area|rural]] life and feature typical clothing, food, and dances (mainly the [[quadrille]]).
