Initially using four-barrel carburetors, engine performance, and fuel economy were increased by the mid-1980s using [[electronic fuel injection]] systems and advanced engine management controls. Muscle car performance began to reappear on intermediate two-door coupΓ©s such as the [[Chevrolet Monte Carlo#Fourth generation (1981β1988)|Chevrolet Monte Carlo SS]] and [[Buick Regal#Second generation (1978)|Buick Regal]].
