As of the [[2010 United States census|2010 census]], there were 7,413 people, 3,257 households, and 2,069 families in the county. The population density was {{convert|6.62|PD/sqmi|PD/km2|1}}. There were 3,859 housing units at an average density of {{convert|3.45|/sqmi|/km2|1}}. The racial makeup of the county was 95.47% [[White (U.S. Census)|White]], 0.28% [[African American (U.S. Census)|African American]], 1.94% [[Native American (U.S. Census)|Native American]], 0.15% [[Asian (U.S. Census)|Asian]], 0.03% [[Race (U.S. Census)|Pacific Islander]], 0.78% from some other races and 1.35% from two or more races. [[Hispanic and Latino Americans|Hispanic or Latino]] people of any race were 2.56% of the population.

In terms of ancestry, 33.8% were [[Germans|German]], 21.3% were [[Norwegians|Norwegian]], 10.6% were [[Irish people|Irish]], 9.5% were [[English people|English]], 8.0% were [[Americans|American]], and 5.5% were [[Swedes|Swedish]].
