==Status and conservation== The redwing has an extensive range, estimated at 10 million square kilometres (3.8 million square miles), and an estimated population of 26 to 40 million individuals in Europe alone. The European population forms approximately 40% of the global population, thus the very preliminary estimate of the global population is 98 to 151 million individuals. The species is believed to approach the thresholds for the population decline criterion of the [[IUCN Red List]] (i.e., declining more than 30% in ten years or three generations), and is therefore precautionarily uplisted to [[near threatened]].<ref name="iucn status 12 November 2021" /> Numbers can be adversely affected by severe winters, which may cause heavy mortality, and cold wet summers, which reduce breeding success.<ref name=hbw/>
