Its total land area is only {{convert|5|sqmi|km²}}. Unlike most other atolls, Arno encloses three different lagoons, a large central one, and two smaller ones in the north and east. Its main lagoon encloses an area of {{convert|130.77|sqmi|km²}}. At a distance of only {{convert|20|km|mi|sp=us}}, it is the closest atoll to the Marshall Islands capital, [[Majuro Atoll]], and can be seen looking east from Majuro on a clear day at low tide. People of Arno are well known for their productivity in making [[copra]] (the dried out meat of [[coconut]]s, from which [[coconut oil]] is extracted). Arno women are renowned for their production of the Kili Bag, a popular handwoven handbag/purse, named after [[Kili Island|another island]] in the Marshall Islands (to which the people of [[Bikini Atoll|Bikini]] were eventually relocated as a result of the [[nuclear weapons testing|US nuclear tests]] that were conducted on their home atoll). Arno supposedly had a traditional "love school".

==History==
Arno Atoll was claimed by the [[German Empire]] along with the rest of the Marshall Islands in 1885.<ref>{{cite journal |last1=Churchill |first1=William |author-link1=William Churchill (ethnologist) |date=1920 |title=Germany's Lost Pacific Empire |jstor=207706 |journal=Geographical Review |volume=10 |issue=2 |pages=84–90|doi=10.2307/207706 |bibcode=1920GeoRv..10...84C }}</ref> After World War I, the island came under the [[South Seas Mandate]] of the [[Empire of Japan]]. Following the end of World War II, Arno Atoll came under the control of the United States as part of the [[Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands]]. The island has been part of the independent Republic of the Marshall Islands since 1986.
