The unincorporated community of [[Fifield (community), Wisconsin|Fifield]] is located in the community, as is the ghost town of [[Coolidge, Wisconsin|Coolidge]]. ==History== Fifield was founded in 1876, where the [[Wisconsin Central Railroad (1871β99)|Wisconsin Central Railroad]] crossed the south fork of the Flambeau River in the big northern forest. The town is named after [[Sam Fifield]], a politician and businessperson who served as Wisconsin's [[List of lieutenant governors of Wisconsin|14th]] [[Lieutenant Governor of Wisconsin|Lieutenant Governor]].<ref>{{cite book |title=Wisconsin Blue Book, 1885 edition |pages=416}}</ref> As logging boomed and the population grew, a town hall was built in 1882, but burned in the fire of 1893, along with Fifield's whole business district of 60 buildings. The [[population density]] was 6.6 people per square mile (2.6/km<sup>2</sup>). There were 760 housing units at an average density of 5.1 per square mile (2.0/km<sup>2</sup>). The racial makeup of the town was 98.08% [[White (U.S. Census)|White]], 0.10% [[African American (U.S. Census)|African American]], 1.21% [[Native American (U.S. Census)|Native American]], 0.10% [[Asian (U.S. Census)|Asian]], 0.30% from [[Race (United States Census)|other races]], and 0.20% from two or more races. There were 436 households, out of which 21.6% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.6% were [[Marriage|married couples]] living together, 3.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.9% were non-families. 30.3% of all households were made up of individuals, and 12.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.27 and the average family size was 2.83. In the town, the population was spread out, with 20.9% under the age of 18, 4.8% from 18 to 24, 25.1% from 25 to 44, 31.7% from 45 to 64, and 17.5% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 44 years. For every 100 females, there were 104.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 104.2 males. The median income for a household in the town was $35,833, and the median income for a family was $44,917. Males had a median income of $32,212 versus $23,646 for females.
