{{Short description|French painter (1615β1675)}} [[File:Gaspard Dughet - Aminta about to rescue Silvia - Google Art Project.jpg|thumb|''Aminta About to Rescue Silvia'', c. 1633β35]] '''Gaspard Dughet''' (15 June 1615 β 25 May 1675), also known as '''Gaspard Poussin''', was a French painter born in [[Rome]]. ==Life== Dughet was born in Rome, the son of a French pastry-cook <ref name=golden>{{cite book|title=France in the Golden Age: Seventeenth Century Paintings in American Collections|first=Pierre|last=Rosenberg| chapter=DUGHET Gaspar also known as Gaspar Poussin| publisher=Metropolitan Museum of Art|location=New York|page=243|year=1982|isbn=9780870992957|url=http://www.metmuseum.org/research/metpublications/France_in_the_Golden_Age_Seventeenth_Century_French_Paintings_in_American_Collections}}</ref> and his Italian wife.<ref name=wallace>{{cite web|title=Treasure of the Month β February 2012|url=http://www.wallacecollection.org/whatson/treasure/115|publisher=Wallace Collectionn|access-date=6 July 2015|archive-date=25 October 2015|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20151025093918/http://www.wallacecollection.org/whatson/treasure/115|url-status=dead}}</ref> He has always generally been considered as a French painter, although in fact he never visited France.<ref name=golden/> Between around 1631 and 1635 he became a pupil of [[Nicolas Poussin]], who had married his sister Anne five years earlier.<ref name=golden/> Because of this connection he was widely known as "Gaspard Poussin."<ref name=wallace/> After leaving Poussin's studio his works developed a more fluid style and developed his pictures of storms which account for 30 out of his 400 known works. <ref name="auto">Grove Dictionary of Art vol 9 pps 375 - 378</ref> He specialised in painting [[Landscape art|landscape]]s of the [[Roman Campagna]]<ref name=EB1911/> becoming, along with his exact contemporary [[Salvator Rosa]], one of the two leading landscape painters of his time.<ref name=golden/> He painted several cycles of frescoes, including one, showing various sites around Rome, at the [[Palazzo Colonna]].<ref name=golden/> He worked with [[Pier Francesco Mola]], [[Francesco Cozza (painter)|Cozza]], and [[Mattia Preti]] at the Palazzo Pamphilj in [[Valmontone]].<ref name=EB1911/> He often collaborated with [[Guillaume Courtois]] who painted the [[staffage]] in his landscapes.
