The Town of Java was founded in 1832 from part of the [[Arcade (town), New York|Town of Arcade]] (then the Town of China). According to the [[United States Census Bureau]], the town has a total area of {{convert|47.3|sqmi|km2}}, of which {{convert|47.1|sqmi|km2}} is land and {{convert|0.2|sqmi|km2}} (0.47%) is water. The largest body of water in Java is Java Lake, which is the headwaters of [[Cattaraugus Creek]].

The west town line is the border of [[Erie County, New York|Erie County]].

The population density was {{convert|47.2|PD/sqmi|PD/km2|sp=us|adj=off}}.  There were 1,035 housing units at an average density of {{convert|22.0|/sqmi|/km2|sp=us|adj=off}}.  The racial makeup of the town was 99.14% [[White (U.S. Census)|White]], 0.14% [[African American (U.S. Census)|African American]], 0.18% [[Native American (U.S. Census)|Native American]], 0.09% [[Asian (U.S. Census)|Asian]], and 0.45% from two or more races. [[Hispanic (U.S. Census)|Hispanic]] or [[Latino (U.S. Census)|Latino]] of any race were 0.41% of the population.

There were 807 households, out of which 35.8% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 62.8% were [[Marriage|married couples]] living together, 5.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 26.8% were non-families. 20.6% of all households were made up of individuals, and 9.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older.  The average household size was 2.75 and the average family size was 3.21.

In the town, the population was spread out, with 27.1% under the age of 18, 7.7% from 18 to 24, 30.9% from 25 to 44, 23.0% from 45 to 64, and 11.4% who were 65 years of age or older.
