The town was founded in 1873<ref>{{cite book | url=https://books.google.com/books?id=w0PWAAAAMAAJ&pg=PA134 | title=A Twentieth Century History of Marshall County, Indiana, Volume 1 | publisher=Lewis Publishing Company | author=McDonald, Daniel | year=1908 | pages=134}}</ref> and was named for [[La Paz]], Bolivia. At the time of its founding, it was served by the [[Chicago]] branch of the [[Baltimore and Ohio Railroad]], now [[CSX]]. The B&O named a coach [[La Paz (B&O)|''La Paz'']] in 1949 to honor the town.

==Geography==
LaPaz is located in northern Marshall County at {{coord|41.457159|-86.308131|type:city_region:US|format=dms|display=inline}}.<ref name="CenPopGazetteer2022"/> It is located on former [[U.S. Route 31 in Indiana|U.S. Route 31]] (now [[Indiana State Road 931]]), just to the north of where it intersects with [[U.S. Route 6 in Indiana|U.S. Route 6]]. US 31 passes {{convert|1|mi}} east of the town on a four-lane freeway, leading north {{convert|17|mi}} to [[South Bend, Indiana|South Bend]]. [[Plymouth, Indiana|Plymouth]], the Marshall [[county seat]], is {{convert|8|mi|0}} to the south. US 6 leads east {{convert|8|mi|0}} to [[Bremen, Indiana|Bremen]] and west {{convert|10|mi|0}} to [[Walkerton, Indiana|Walkerton]].

The racial makeup of the town was 96.73% [[White (U.S. Census)|White]], 0.20% [[African American (U.S. Census)|African American]], 0.82% [[Native American (U.S. Census)|Native American]], 1.02% from [[Race (United States Census)|other races]], and 1.23% from two or more races. [[Hispanic (U.S. Census)|Hispanic]] or [[Latino (U.S. Census)|Latino]] of any race were 2.25% of the population.
