{{Short description|Vector space with a topology defined by convex open sets}} In [[functional analysis]] and related areas of [[mathematics]], '''locally convex topological vector spaces''' ('''LCTVS''') or '''locally convex spaces''' are examples of [[topological vector space]]s (TVS) that generalize [[normed space]]s. They can be defined as [[topological space|topological]] vector spaces whose topology is [[base (topology)|generated]] by translations of [[balanced set|balanced]], [[absorbent set|absorbent]], [[convex set]]s. Alternatively they can be defined as a [[vector space]] with a [[family of sets|family]] of [[seminorm]]s, and a topology can be defined in terms of that family. Although in general such spaces are not necessarily [[normable]], the existence of a convex [[local base]] for the [[null vector (vector space)|zero vector]] is strong enough for the [[Hahn–Banach theorem]] to hold, yielding a sufficiently rich theory of continuous [[linear functional]]s. [[Fréchet space]]s are locally convex topological vector spaces that are [[Completely metrizable space|completely metrizable]] (with a choice of complete metric). The family of seminorms defined by <math>p_{a,b}(f) = \sup_x \left|x^a D_b f(x)\right|</math> is separated, and countable, and the space is complete, so this metrizable space is a Fréchet space. It is known as the [[Schwartz space]], or the space of functions of rapid decrease, and its [[dual space]] is the space of [[tempered distribution]]s. An important [[function space]] in functional analysis is the space <math>D(U)</math> of smooth functions with [[compact support]] in <math>U \subseteq \R^n.</math> A more detailed construction is needed for the topology of this space because the space <math>C_0^{\infty}(U)</math> is not complete in the uniform norm. The topology on <math>D(U)</math> is defined as follows: for any fixed [[compact set]] <math>K \subseteq U,</math> the space <math>C_0^{\infty}(K)</math> of functions <math>f \in C_0^{\infty}</math> with <math>\operatorname{supp}(f) \subseteq K</math> is a [[Fréchet space]] with countable family of seminorms <math>\|f\|_m = \sup_{k \leq m} \sup_x \left|D^k f(x)\right|</math> (these are actually norms, and the completion of the space <math>C_0^{\infty}(K)</math> with the <math>\| \cdot \|_m</math> norm is a Banach space <math>D^m(K)</math>). Given any collection <math>\left(K_a\right)_{a\in A}</math> of compact sets, directed by inclusion and such that their union equal <math>U,</math> the <math>C_0^{\infty}\left(K_a\right)</math> form a [[Direct system (mathematics)|direct system]], and <math>D(U)</math> is defined to be the limit of this system. Such a limit of Fréchet spaces is known as an [[LF space]]. More concretely, <math>D(U)</math> is the union of all the <math>C_0^{\infty}\left(K_a\right)</math> with the strongest {{em|locally convex}} topology which makes each [[inclusion map]] <math>C_0^{\infty}\left(K_a\right) \hookrightarrow D(U)</math> continuous. This space is locally convex and complete. However, it is not metrizable, and so it is not a Fréchet space. The dual space of <math>D\left(\R^n\right)</math> is the space of [[Distribution (mathematics)|distributions]] on <math>\R^n.</math> More abstractly, given a [[topological space]] <math>X,</math> the space <math>C(X)</math> of continuous (not necessarily bounded) functions on <math>X</math> can be given the topology of [[uniform convergence]] on compact sets. This topology is defined by semi-norms <math>\varphi_K(f) = \max \{|f(x)| : x \in K\}</math> (as <math>K</math> varies over the [[directed set]] of all compact subsets of <math>X</math>). When <math>X</math> is locally compact (for example, an open set in <math>\R^n</math>) the [[Stone–Weierstrass theorem]] applies—in the case of real-valued functions, any subalgebra of <math>C(X)</math> that separates points and contains the constant functions (for example, the subalgebra of polynomials) is [[dense set|dense]]. ===Examples of spaces lacking local convexity=== Many topological vector spaces are locally convex. Examples of spaces that lack local convexity include the following: * The [[Lp space|spaces <math>L^p([0, 1])</math>]] for <math>0 < p < 1</math> are equipped with the [[F-space|F-norm]] <math display=block>\|f\|^p_p = \int_0^1 |f(x)|^p \, dx.</math> They are not locally convex, since the only convex neighborhood of zero is the whole space. Given locally convex spaces <math>X</math> and <math>Y</math> with families of seminorms <math>\left(p_\alpha\right)_{\alpha}</math> and <math>\left(q_\beta\right)_{\beta}</math> respectively, a linear map <math>T : X \to Y</math> is continuous if and only if for every <math>\beta,</math> there exist <math>\alpha_1, \ldots, \alpha_n</math> and <math>M > 0</math> such that for all <math>v \in X,</math> <math display=block>q_\beta(Tv) \leq M \left(p_{\alpha_1}(v) +\dotsb+p_{\alpha_n}(v)\right).</math> In other words, each seminorm of the range of <math>T</math> is [[Bounded function|bounded]] above by some finite sum of seminorms in the [[Domain of a function|domain]].
