Having started his songwriting career with ''[[The Earl Carroll Vanities|Earl Carroll's Vanities]]'' on [[Broadway theatre|Broadway]] in the late 1920s, he joined the [[American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers|ASCAP]] in 1930.{{citation needed|date=May 2021}} In 1934, he was signed by [[Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer|MGM]] and relocated to Hollywood, eventually writing full scores for feature films.
