The '''Russell 3000 Index''' is a [[Capitalization-weighted index|capitalization-weighted]] [[stock market index]] that seeks to be a [[Benchmarking|benchmark]] of the entire [[Stock markets in the United States|U.S. stock market]]. It measures the performance of the 3,000 largest [[publicly held]] companies incorporated in the United States as measured by total market capitalization, and represents approximately 98% of the American public equity market. The index was launched on January 1, 1984, and is maintained by [[FTSE Russell]], a subsidiary of the London Stock Exchange Group. {{As of|2024|12|31|post=,}} the weighted average market capitalization of a company in the index is approximately $966&nbsp;million and the median market capitalization is $2.28&nbsp;billion.

The [[ticker symbol]] on most systems is either RUA or ^RUA.
