Its 2005 census population was 60,597. It also serves as the municipal seat for the surrounding Teziutlán Municipality. The municipality has an area of 84.2 km2 (32.51 sq mi) and a population of 88,970. Teziutlán is described in some guidebooks as a "picturesque colonial town". It was founded (by spaniar) on 15 March 1552 at a location known to the locals as "Teziuhyotepetzintlancingo". means "Little mount with hailstones". The name Teziutlán is Nahuatl, and means "place with hailstones". During the presidency of Porfirio Díaz, the town gained prosperity, and it is described as "a commercial town of importance, very often visited by traveling salesmen from businesses in this country and abroad... It depends on a group of businesses that handle significant capital and sell on a large scale in the principal markets of Europe and the United States." Teziutlán was linked to the expanding railway network during the Porfiriato presidency, which aided its prosperity. ==Geography== The municipality has an area of 84.2 km. Teziutlán is located at , close to the border with Veracruz, in the Sierra Madre Oriental. The area is drained by the Río El Calvario, Río Xóloatl and Río Xoloco rivers. ===Climate=== The climate is highland subtropical but ever moist (Köppen: Cfb) similar to the plateaus of southern Brazil, but with longer soft periods of time.{{Weather box | width = 77% <!-- 77% if there is a template or image next to it --> | collapsed = <!-- y, if you have normal updates --> | open = | metric first = y <!-- always, except UK or US cities --> | single line = y | location = Teziutlán <!--in the order as it appears in the table, not all of the following data may be available, especially records and days of precipitation --> | Jan mean C =11.2 | Feb mean C =12.0 | Mar mean C =14.8 | Apr mean C =16.5 | May mean C =16.8 | Jun mean C =16.2 | Jul mean C =15.2 | Aug mean C =15.1 | Sep mean C =15.0 | Oct mean C =13.5 | Nov mean C =12.6 | Dec mean C =11.7 | Jan high C =16.2 | Feb high C =17.1 | Mar high C =20.2 | Apr high C =21.8 | May high C =22.0 | Jun high C =20.7 | Jul high C =19.8 | Aug high C =19.4 | Sep high C =18.8 | Oct high C =17.3 | Nov high C =17.1 | Dec high C =16.5 | Jan record high C =26.5 | Feb record high C =29.0 | Mar record high C =32.0 | Apr record high C =30.0 | May record high C =35.0 | Jun record high C =30.0 | Jul record high C =30.0 | Aug record high C =26.0 | Sep record high C =27.0 | Oct record high C =27.0 | Nov record high C =29.0 | Dec record high C =26.5 | Jan low C =6.2 | Feb low C =6.9 | Mar low C =9.4 | Apr low C =11.1 | May low C =11.6 | Jun low C =11.6 | Jul low C =10.6 | Aug low C =10.8 | Sep low C =11.1 | Oct low C =9.7 | Nov low C =8.0 | Dec low C =6.8 | Jan record low C =-4.0 | Feb record low C =-4.0 | Mar record low C =-1.0 | Apr record low C =1.0 | May record low C =1.5 | Jun record low C =6.5 | Jul record low C =6.0 | Aug record low C =7.0 | Sep record low C =3.0 | Oct record low C =1.5 | Nov record low C =-1.5 | Dec record low C =-5.0 | precipitation colour = green | Jan precipitation mm =52 | Feb precipitation mm =46 | Mar precipitation mm =32 | Apr precipitation mm =45 | May precipitation mm =81 | Jun precipitation mm =214 | Jul precipitation mm =164 | Aug precipitation mm =194 | Sep precipitation mm =298 | Oct precipitation mm =172 | Nov precipitation mm =91 | Dec precipitation mm =51 | unit precipitation days = 0.1 mm | Jan precipitation days =10.6 | Feb precipitation days =10.7 | Mar precipitation days =9.5 | Apr precipitation days =8.8 | May precipitation days =8.8 | Jun precipitation days =16.1 | Jul precipitation days =18.4 | Aug precipitation days =20.2 | Sep precipitation days =19.5 | Oct precipitation days =17.4 | Nov precipitation days =12.1 | Dec precipitation days =11.2 | source = WeatherBase }} ==Notable people== The city is noteworthy as the birthplace of two prominent twentieth-century politicians: *Manuel Ávila Camacho (24 April 1897 – 13 October 1955), President of Mexico from 1940 to 1946. *Vicente Lombardo Toledano (16 July 1894 – 16 November 1968), founder of the Confederación de Trabajadores de México (CTM).
