Colman was educated at [[Heatherdown Preparatory School]] in Berkshire<ref name=obit/> and at the age of 13 enrolled at the [[Britannia Royal Naval College|Royal Naval College]], [[Dartmouth, Devon|Dartmouth]], and joined the [[Royal Navy]].
