It was located in the [[North Karelia]] [[regions of Finland|region]]. In 2019, the municipality had a population of 2,140 <ref name="population_count"/> and covered an area of {{convert|838.07|km2}}, of which {{convert|37.75|km2|abbr=on}} was water.<ref name="total_area"/> The [[population density]] was {{pop density|2140|838.07|km2|sqmi}}. Neighbouring municipalities were [[Nurmes]], [[Rautavaara]] and [[Sotkamo]].

The municipality was unilingually [[Finnish language|Finnish]].
