'''words''' is a standard file on [[Unix]] and Unix-like operating systems, and is simply a [[newline]]-delimited list of dictionary words. It is used, for instance, by [[spell checker|spell-checking programs]].<ref name="Tushar2013"/>

The words file is usually stored in {{code|/usr/share/dict/words}} or {{code|/usr/dict/words}}.

On [[Debian]] and [[Ubuntu (operating system)|Ubuntu]], the {{tt|words}} file is provided by the {{tt|wordlist}} package, or its provider packages {{tt|wbritish}}, {{tt|wamerican}}, etc. On [[Fedora (operating system)|Fedora]] and [[Arch Linux]], the {{tt|words}} file is provided by the {{tt|words}} package. The {{tt|words}} package is sourced from data from the [[Moby Project]], a public domain compilation of words.<ref name="words3038"/>
