Born in London, the son of film and television producer Julian Wintle, he was educated at Stowe School and Magdalen College, Oxford.<ref>{{#invoke:citation/CS1|citation |CitationClass=web }}</ref> He is also Chairman of the Bình Hòa massacre Trust Fund.
