Memepool was founded in 1998 by Joshua Schachter and a number of the early contributors, making it one of the earliest weblogs.<ref>Template:Cite book</ref> It was also one of the most popular early weblogs,<ref>Template:Cite news</ref> with a reputation for strange and surprising links.<ref>Template:Cite news</ref><ref>Template:Cite news </ref> It was maintained by Schachter and Jeff Smith. Schachter's links collected for Memepool were the predecessor of a project that later became del.icio.us.<ref>Template:Cite book</ref>
