It is managed by the Norfolk Wildlife Trust.<ref name=NWT>{{#invoke:citation/CS1|citation |CitationClass=web }}</ref> It is part of the Bure Broads and Marshes Site of Special Scientific Interest,<ref name=bure>{{#invoke:citation/CS1|citation |CitationClass=web }}</ref> and the Broadland Ramsar site<ref name=broadram>{{#invoke:citation/CS1|citation |CitationClass=web }}</ref> and Special Protection Area,<ref name=broadspa>{{#invoke:citation/CS1|citation |CitationClass=web }}</ref> and The Broads Special Area of Conservation.<ref name=broadssac>{{#invoke:citation/CS1|citation |CitationClass=web }}</ref> It is also part of the Bure Marshes National Nature Reserve<ref name=burennr>{{#invoke:citation/CS1|citation |CitationClass=web }}</ref> and Nature Conservation Review site, Grade I.<ref>Template:Cite book</ref>

The water quality of this broad is very high and it has large beds of water lilies, which provide a habitat for many insects, including red eyed and variable damselflies.<ref name=NWT/>

Access to the boardwalk through the site is by boat only.
