Adygeysk (Template:Langx; Template:Langx) is a town in the Republic of Adygea, Russia, located near Krasnodar Reservoir, Template:Convert northwest of Maykop, the capital of the republic. Population: 12,721 (2020), Template:Ru-census

It was previously known as Adygeysk(y) (until July 27, 1976),<ref name="KubanATS" /><ref name="gr" /><ref name="Pospelov" />Teuchezhsk (until 1990).<ref name="gr" />

HistoryEdit

It was founded as the settlement of Adygeysky ({{#invoke:Lang|lang}}) in 1969 due to the construction of Krasnodar Reservoir.<ref name="gr">Cities and Towns of Russia Encyclopedia, p. 14</ref> According to some other sources, the original name was "Adygeysk".<ref name="KubanATS">Azarenkova et al., p. 269.</ref><ref name="Pospelov">Pospelov, p. 23</ref> The name alluded to the Adyghe people indigenous to the region.<ref name="Pospelov" /> On July 27, 1976, it was granted town status and renamed Teuchezhsk ({{#invoke:Lang|lang}}),<ref name="KubanATS" /> for Adyghe poet Tsug Teuchezh.<ref name="Pospelov" /> In 1990, the original name was restored.<ref name="gr" />

Administrative and municipal statusEdit

Within the framework of administrative divisions, it is, together with two rural localities, incorporated as Adygeysk Republican Urban Okrug—an administrative unit with the status equal to that of the districts.<ref name="Ref1">Law #171</ref> It has the following rural localities under its jurisdiction:<ref name="Mun">Law #270</ref>

As a municipal division, Adygeysk Republican Urban Okrug is incorporated as Adygeysk Urban Okrug.<ref name="Ref1m">Law #171 stipulates that the borders of the republican urban okrugs are identical to those of the municipal urban okrugs.</ref>
