In Indian [[Vedas|Vedic literature]], Canopus is associated with the sage [[Agastya]], one of the ancient [[siddhar]]s and [[rishi]]s (the others are associated with the stars of the [[Big Dipper]]).<ref name="Frawley 1993">{{cite book|last=Frawley|first=David|title=Gods, Sages and Kings: Vedic Secrets of Ancient Civilization|publisher=Motilal Banarsidass |location=New Delhi, India|date=1993}}</ref> To Agastya, the star is said to be the 'cleanser of waters', and its rising coincides with the calming of the waters of the [[Indian Ocean]].
