Freedom Beast is an activist who was arrested for opposing [[apartheid]]. However, he is rescued by [[Animal Man]] and [[B'wana Beast]] (Mike Maxwell), Mndawe's predecessor and future mentor.<ref name="dc-ency"/> Maxwell gives Mndawe his elixir and helmet and appoints him as his successor.<ref>''Animal Man'' #13.
