In Greek mythology, Cynortas (Template:Langx, Template:IPAc-en) or Cynortes (Template:Langx, Template:IPAc-en) or Cynortus was a king of Sparta.

Cynortas was the son of King Amyclas of Sparta<ref>Apollodorus, 1.9.5 & 3.10.3; Pausanias, 3.13.1</ref> and Queen Diomede, and thus brother to King Argalus,<ref name=":1"/> Hyacinthus,<ref>Apollodorus, 3.10.3; Pausanias, 3.1.3</ref> Laodamia<ref>Pausanias, 10.9.5</ref> (or Leanira<ref>Apollodorus, 3.9.1</ref>), Hegesandre,<ref>Scholia on Homer, Odyssey 4.10; Pherecydes, fr. 132</ref> Harpalus,<ref>Pausanias, 7.18.5 (Achaica)</ref> Polyboea<ref>Pausanias, 3.19.4</ref> and in other versions, of Daphne.<ref>Parthenius, Erotica Pathemata 15</ref> He was the father of Oebalus<ref name=":1">Pausanias, 3.1.3</ref> or of Perieres,<ref>Apollodorus, 1.9.5 & 3.10.3–4</ref> who either succeeded to the throne.
MythologyEdit
After the death of his brother Argalus, Cynortes inherited the kingdom and eventually became the king of Sparta.<ref name=":1" /> He is presumed to have participated in Pelops' attack on Oenomaus in 1312 BC.<ref>{{#invoke:citation/CS1|citation |CitationClass=web }}</ref> His tomb was shown near Scias at Sparta.<ref>Pausanias, 3.13.1; Scholia on Euripides, Orestes 447</ref>
